Buying Local Has a Tremendous Impact in Todd County

December 15, 2025

Shopping locally always has a positive effect, especially in a community like ours where small businesses are the backbone of our region’s identity.

On the shelves of our local shops, you’ll find gift ideas that feel special and intentional. Our restaurants work hard to create one of a kind dishes on their menus. And we also have producers who specialize in services and experiences that make our lives easier and more enjoyable.

Todd County is fortunate to have an abundance of creative makers and there are plenty of ways you can support our small businesses during the gift giving season and beyond.

You can make a purchase, opt for a gift card, or simply spread the word by leaving a positive review on social media. All three have an equally important effect.

Small Businesses Are the Backbone of Todd County

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy, small businesses are truly the backbone of Minnesota’s economy, making up 99.5% of all businesses and employing 1.3 million people. That’s almost half of the state’s entire workforce.

Reports have shown that for every $100 spent at a locally-owned business $73 remains in that community, compared to the $43 that remains when purchasing from a chain.

It’s also been found that independent locally-owned businesses recirculate 48% of their revenue locally compared to 13% by chain businesses.

In Todd County, that has a significant impact in a number of ways:

  1. When you spend locally, the money stays local
  2. The sales tax collected from those transactions enables Todd County to invest in public services, infrastructure and other community improvements
  3. As our local businesses grow, they are able to create more jobs for our residents
  4. When you shop locally, you’re driving less, which is better for the environment

Dollar for dollar, when you shop local, you also ensure that our one-of-a-kind restaurants, service providers, and shops can continue adding a vibrant dimension to the community.

Together, we can create a culture where we’re all part of their success.
