Career and Technical Education: Building a Skilled Workforce for Todd County’s Future

    March 13, 2025

In today’s fast-paced and increasingly competitive world, career and technical education prepares individuals for high-demand, well-paying jobs while driving economic growth. As industries evolve and the job market requires specialized skills, career and technical education provides students with practical, hands-on training that directly translates into workforce readiness.

In a rapidly evolving job market, the need for skilled professionals is more significant than ever. Career and Technical Education programs are vital in preparing students for high-demand jobs and providing a direct pathway to economic development. In Todd County, Alexandria Technical and Community College stands at the forefront of this effort, offering exceptional opportunities that benefit students and strengthen local industries and communities.

A Tradition of Excellence and Innovation

ATCC has a long history of adapting to meet the changing needs of students and the workforce. “We have transformed from a great technical college to a great technical and community college that provides opportunities for students on-campus and online,” says Jeff Wild, Vice President of Advancement & Outreach and Executive Foundation Director at ATCC.

This evolution has been driven by thoughtful planning and the dedication of staff and faculty who genuinely care about student success. ATCC’s combination of academic excellence, affordability, and robust student support ensures that students in Todd County and beyond receive the best possible education. The college’s commitment to workforce preparedness also makes it a key driver of economic development in the region.

    Industry Partnerships Fuel Workforce Readiness

One of the most significant factors behind ATCC’s success is its strong partnerships with local businesses and industries. These collaborations ensure that the college’s programs align with the skills employers demand, leading to exceptional employment outcomes for graduates. “Due largely to close-knit relationships with industry professionals and community leaders, ATCC boasts powerful graduate employment outcomes and starting salaries,” Wild explains. “As of October 2023, median earnings for recent ATCC graduates are more than $8,000 over the national midpoint as reported by the U.S. Department of Education.”

ATCC students regularly engage in community-focused projects, gaining real-world experience while giving back. In 2023, students and volunteers prepared over 250 tax returns for low-income individuals, resulting in $527,000 in refunds. Carpentry students helped build homes in partnership with Habitat for Humanity, and police training students provided security at community events. These opportunities enhance learning and foster a strong sense of civic responsibility.

Faculty members maintain close ties with industry through annual Program  Advisory Meetings, where industry partners—often ATCC graduates—review curricula to ensure programs stay aligned with workforce needs. Students also participate in industry visits, gaining valuable insights and connecting with alums working in dynamic manufacturing environments.

High-Demand Fields and Pathways to Success

With over 50 programs and transfer pathways, ATCC caters to a wide range of career interests. Some of the highest-demand fields include:

    • Healthcare: Programs like Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN), Medical Laboratory Technician, and Speech-Language Pathology Assistant address the growing need for healthcare professionals.
    • Information Technology: Careers in cybersecurity, data science, and computer information systems are expanding rapidly.
    • Skilled Trades: Fields such as welding, mechatronics, and machine tool technology offer high starting pay rates and robust job opportunities.
    • Police Training and Education: As the most significant and oldest police training college in Minnesota, ATCC’s law enforcement programs are in extremely high demand.

Wild offers advice for students considering these fields: “Explore your interests and choose a field that aligns with your passions and strengths. Gain hands-on experience through internships and apprenticeships. Stay updated on industry trends and advancements to keep your skills relevant. And build connections with professionals in your chosen field—networking can open doors to job opportunities and provide valuable career insights.”
